Bounded by the Deerfield River and the Pocumtuck Ridge, Deerfield’s corner of the Pioneer Valley is a distance runner’s paradise. The boys cross country team takes full advantage of the favorable geography, crisp autumn air, and beautiful vistas provided by New England in the fall. Varsity and Junior Varsity runners train together daily on runs ranging all over the surrounding hills and soft green fields. Our philosophy is to focus on sportsmanship and collegiality with our competitors first, individual improvement and effort second, and team success third. Fortunately, when our teams attend to priorities #1 and #2, the third usually takes care of itself.
Deerfield runners, no matter their ability, receive individualized attention and personalized training plans, including summer training calendars. Every athlete is given an opportunity to improve week to week and earn a spot on the Varsity seven, in addition to culminating the season with a championship race. New England Cross Country features a Junior Varsity championship, in addition to the traditional Varsity race, so participation and full effort are at a premium.
More than our championship trophies, Deerfield cross country is proud of the roster of healthy lifelong runners that has emerged from the program. From the most seasoned harrier to the rookie jogger looking to tackle a new challenge, Deerfield cross country is close-knit team where any student-athlete can find a home for the fall.
Any student-athletes interested in running for Deerfield should send an email to Mike Schloat, Head Coach of Boys’ Cross Country. Run smooth!
