Basketball: Varsity Girls lost to NMH

Deerfield put forth their best effort but lost a thriller to local rival Northfield Mount Hermon in overtime. The game went back and forth for the entire 32 minutes of regulation, with neither team gaining a lead of more than 8 at any point. The game came down to the final seconds of play, when Deerfield was forced to foul an NMH player with 3.8 seconds left. Up by three points, NMH looked to seal the deal from the free throw line, but missed on both attempts. Senior Libby Murray then pulled down one of her team-high 14 rebounds and threw the ball down the court to a streaking Becca Harrington ’14. Harrington collected the ball and miraculously got off and sank a three-point shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

Despite Deerfield’s heroics in regulation, NMH controlled the overtime period and eventually pulled out a 63-59 win. Harrington put on a top-notch offensive performance, with 21 points, including four three-pointers (one of which forced the extra period). Jess Hom ’14 played an all-around solid game with 16 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Murray finished the day with a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Deerfield will face Westminster this Wednesday, February 19th at home in the final stretch of regular season play.
