After a poor performance at NMH on Wednesday, the Big Green hit the road yet again on Saturday morning for the long trip to Exeter looking to redeem themselves. The first period started slowly, with both teams struggling to maintain sustained possession, and Exeter was able to get on the board first as their talented forward slipped a puck through Emily Yue ’16 (27 saves) from a bad angle. The Big Green did not crumble, however, and tied the score later in the period when Meghan Halloran ’17 deflected in a shot from Maryanne Iodice ’14 on the power play. Deerfield took control of the game in the second and third periods, restricting Exeter to shots from the perimeter while generating many chances of their own in close. Devinne Cullinane ’14, Katherine Jackson ’15, Kylie Davis ’14, Katherine Goguen ’16, and Madi Lyford ’15 did a masterful job of killing off a two-player disadvantage early in the third period, while Rachel Sit ’16, Elliot Gilbert ’16, and Shai Lineberry ’17 had a couple of key shifts down the stretch. Despite swarming the Exeter goal for much of the final period, in took Deerfield until overtime to get the winning goal, as Kayla O’Connor ’14 took a pass down low from Halloran, drove hard to net, and managed to poke the rebound home. This was a great team win for the Big Green, and we look forward to sustaining this momentum as we take on rival Choate at home on Wednesday. Many thanks to the Sit family for the pizza, fruit, and cookies after the game!
