After two good days of practice, the Big Green was excited to take on rival Choate at home on Wednesday afternoon. Neither team was able to gain an advantage in the first period, as both goalies made some key saves and each side killed off a penalty. The second period was a different story, however, as Deerfield exploded for three goals to take a commanding lead into the third period. On the first goal, Taylor Morash ’16 found Lucy Lytle ’15 behind the net, who then made a great feed out front which Devinne Cullinane ’14 slammed into an empty net. A few minutes later, Maryanne Iodice ’14 made a great cross-ice breakout pass to Cullinane, who took it the length of the rink and sniped a shot into the top corner on a 2 vs. 1. Cullinane completed her hat-trick on the penalty kill, when she picked up a loose puck against the boards, attacked the seam, faked out the Choate defense and expertly slid the puck through the Choate goalie on the backhand. Choate was able to get on the board early in the third period, as a defensive miscue left one of their forwards wide open in front of the net, and she had plenty of time to lift the puck over Emily Yue ’16. Deerfield maintained their two-goal lead until late in the third, when Choate capitalized on a 6 vs. 4 opportunity to pull within one. Our defense held strong, however, and we ended the game with a well-deserved victory. Yue had a fantastic game in goal (24 saves), and in general the whole team played with heart and made good decisions in each zone. Up next is New Hampton at home on Friday evening. Many thanks to the Yue family for the taco salad after the game!
