The home squad had some luck behind them on Wednesday afternoon, as they defeated Williston-Northampton 48-47. The Big Green jumped out to an early lead and appeared to be in control of the game, but sloppy play on both the offensive and defensive fronts allowed Williston to hang within a few points for most of the first half. Deerfield finished the first 16 minutes up 22-15, but came out very slow to start the next 16, giving up three back-to-back-to-back three-point shots that gave Williston the lead by four. Senior captain, Becca Harrington, then stepped up for Deerfield, playing tenacious defense and hitting the long-range shots to give the home team control again. A few recurring issues from the scorer’s table stopped the back-and-forth game more than once and halted momentum for both teams. In the waning minutes, Deerfield maintained the lead by one point, after crucial free throws by Harrington, and Jess Hom extended the lead to three with two free throws of her own with just over five seconds remaining. However, Deerfield did not make it easy on themselves, as they fouled a Williston player attempting a three-point shot with just two seconds remaining. Fortunately for the Big Green, Williston only converted on two of their three attempts, and Deerfield successfully ran off the last two seconds to secure a 48-47 victory. Harrington finished with a game-high 23 points, along with 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Hom also chipped in 14 points, with 3 assists and 4 steals.
Deerfield returns to action on Friday, January 17th versus Vermont Academy and again on Saturday, January 18th versus Andover.
