Deerfield traveled up to Vermont and put together an all-around team effort to defeat the home team 53-39. Vermont took the early lead in the opening minutes of the contest, quickly going up 3-0. After working through a few kinks, Deerfield picked up the pressure and went on a 21-0 run over the span of nearly ten minutes. Caroline Ashford ’14 got Deerfield going on the inside, while Becca Harrington ’14 and Jess Hom ’14 connected from long range. Kemi Akande ’15 provided an immediate spark off the bench, playing tenacious full-court defense and driving the lane offensively. Freshman Lindsay Cureton also came off the bench and displayed solid play on both the offensive and defense fronts for the Big Green, who entered the break with a double-digit lead. The second half saw contributions from the entire Deerfield squad, who never relinquished their lead. A mix of full-court pressure, man-to-man and zone kept Vermont on their heels, but never fully out of reach. However, Deerfield remained strong, never allowing their lead to drop under ten points, and closed out the game. Ashford led all scorers with 14 points, while Harrington chipped in 12 and Akande put up 5 in an all-around game.
Deerfield will look to extend their win streak to three games, as they travel to Andover on Saturday, January 18 to face a strong team on their home court.
