Deerfield hit the road this afternoon to take on a talented and aggressive Loomis squad, and came out on the wrong end of a 4-3 overtime loss. The Big Green got on the board less than two minutes into the game, when a harmless looking dump in managed to sneak by the Loomis goaltender. Lucy Lytle ’15 got credit for the goal. Though the home team was able to tie the score, Deerfield reclaimed the lead when Kayla O’Connor ’14 finished off a beautiful passing sequence from Katherine Jackson ’15 and Meghan Halloran ’17. Though we headed into the second period up by a goal, Loomis took charge in the next fifteen minutes, maintaining good possession in our defensive zone. Our coverage held strong however, and we were able to force Loomis into taking shots from the outside. Unfortunately, two of these shots eluded goalie Molly Kennedy ’16, including one on the power play, and Deerfield headed into the final frame down 3-2. The period began with a parade to the penalty box for the visitors, but Devinne Cullinane ’14 and Kylie Davis ’14 both made huge plays in killing off a two player disadvantage. With six minutes to go in the game, Deerfield earned their own power play, and Maryanne Iodice ’14 wasted no time in blasting the equalizer past the Loomis keeper. Jackson and Katherine Goguen ’16 earned assists on the play. In overtime, Loomis took advantage of an early defensive breakdown, as we left a forward wide open in the slot, and she quickly fired the winning goal over the shoulder of Kennedy, who stopped 24 shots on the afternoon. Deerfield had 18 shots on the Loomis goal. We will get back to work tomorrow in preparation for the defending New England champions from Nobles on Friday night. Many thanks to the Greenbaums and Nottebohms for the snacks after the game!
