Deerfield suffered a 46-59 loss at the hands of the host team, Pomfret, in their final game of the 2013 calendar year. A game that started off as a strong back-and-forth battle ultimately swung in favor of the home team. Despite their usual aggressive man-to-man defense, spear-headed by the solid play of junior Caroline Coppinger, Deerfield was unable to control the play of Pomfret’s strong guards. A few easy transition baskets off of Deerfield turnovers, coupled with the Big Green going cold from the floor, put Deerfield in a hole in the first half. Despite this deficit, senior Kate Ginna led an exceptional first-half charge. Ginna continuously hit the boards hard on the offensive front that translated into put-backs, and on the defensive front to stop the Pomfret charge. Ginna even rounded out her great first-half performance with a three-point ball to bring the Big Green within one point at the half.
Despite Ginna’s inspired first-half play, Deerfield could never overcome the Pomfret edge. Deerfield finished out the Pomfret tournament with a 2-1 record and heads into the holiday break with a winning record at 4-3. The Big Green squad, whose all-around strong team play has carried the team to victory in three of their last four games, will look to continue their efforts in 2014 when they return to play, travelling to Taft on January 8th.
