The Deerfield Academy Girls’ Varsity basketball team traveled just up the road and lost a hard-fought battle to local rival Northfield Mount Hermon by a final score of 55-45. The Big Green came hot out of the gate to start the game, gaining a considerable advantage. The team used tenacious man-to-man defense to force turnovers and get out in transition. Aggressive defense led to some early foul trouble for all three senior captains – Libby Murray, Becca Harrington and Caroline Ashford – but strong all-around play from fellow seniors, Kate Ginna and Jess Hom, and juniors, Caitlin Burke and Kemi Akande, kept the visitors in the game. Northfield closed the half on a big run, carried by strong outside shooting.
Despite another great run to start the second half, including multiple charges drawn and shot clock violations forced, Deerfield did not end up with enough fire power to defeat NMH. Libby Murray led the way for the Big Green, finishing with 10 points on a solid 4-for-6 performance from the field and adding in six steals from the defensive end. Fellow captain Caroline Ashford chipped in six points and eight rebounds of her own.
Deerfield will look to build off of this game as they head to the Blackburn Tournament at Worcester Academy this Saturday, December 14th, where they will face a strong team from the Tilton School at 1:00pm.
