In the opening round of the Blackburn Tournament at Worcester Academy, the Big Green dropped their second game of the season to the Tilton School by a final score of 46-32. Deerfield hung tight against a strong Tilton team who has been in the NEPSAC Finals the last four seasons and won the Championship twice. Despite a slow start offensively – taking three minutes of play to score their first points – Deerfield never let Tilton take a lead of more than three points, and even led at points throughout the first half. Senior leadership once again led the charge for the Big Green, with Libby Murray scoring all nine of her points in the first half to keep the score close. Fellow senior Kate Ginna added a great spark to the lineup, working with Caroline Ashford ’14 to contain Tilton’s strong low post players and contribute offensively as well. Deerfield set the defensive bar high for the game, holding Tilton to just 21 first-half points, and entered the break down by just three points.
Tilton opened the second half on a 9-2 run and extended their lead up to 10 quickly. Although Deerfield was never able to cut deeply into that deficit, strong man-to-man defense kept the Big Green in the game. Post graduate Jess Hom was the key on the defensive end, drawing three charges, chipping in three steals and sliding into help defense to tie up the ball numerous times. Junior Caitlin Burke also proved vital on the defensive end, pulling down numerous rebounds, all in the crucial waning minutes of the game when Deerfield needed a stop the most.
Improving every game, Deerfield will return to action on Wednesday when they host Miss Hall’s School at home at 3:00pm.
