The Deerfield Academy Girls’ Varsity basketball team improved to 2-0 on their home court this Wednesday with a 52-39 win over Miss Hall’s School. The home team used a balanced effort to get the win, with three players scoring in the double digits. Senior Libby Murray led the way with a double-double (15 points and 12 rebounds) while also chipping in five steals. Fellow seniors Becca Harrington and Jess Hom scored 16 and 14 points, respectively. Tri-captain, Caroline Ashford, controlled the post for the Big Green, playing solid defense and pulling down five rebounds.
Deerfield got off to a quick start and never relinquished their lead. The strong effort by the starting five was carried on throughout the entire game, sparked particularly by the play of juniors Kemi Akande and Caitlin Burke. Akande played tenacious man-to-man defense, getting numerous deflections and stealing the ball twice. Burke put in an all-around effort with six points, four rebounds, and three steals.
The Big Green will travel to Pomfret December 19th and 20th to face three strong teams in Berkshire, Cushing and Pomfret at a holiday tournament.
