The Deerfield Academy Girls’ Varsity Basketball team won their third straight game by a final score of 51-33 over Cushing Academy. Deerfield once again relied on a strong defensive effort in their victory, holding Cushing scoreless for the first five minutes of play. The squad’s ability to switch between man-to-man and zone defenses kept Cushing on their heels for most of the game. Deerfield’s strong defense translated into easy fast-break points throughout the game, and allowed the team to never relinquish their early lead. Cushing, however, never relented, and strong play by their point guard (who scored 11 of her team’s 19 first-half points) kept Cushing within reach for most of the game.
Deerfield once again put together a very strong all-around effort, combining strong defense with great team basketball on offense. Leading the offensive charge was junior Caitlin Burke, whose excellent shooting performance carried the Big Green at times throughout the game. The Big Green shared the ball and worked the Cushing defense inside and out to create open shots all over the floor. While all of Deerfield’s guards took advantage of the openings, their posts took advantage of the opportunity to be ball distributors, chipping in near double-digit assist numbers.
Deerfield will look to finish off their strong three-game run as they face the host team in their final game of the tournament Friday afternoon.
