Deerfield Academy opened up their play in the Pomfret Tournament with a convincing 58-42 victory over a strong Berkshire team. The Big Green put together a complete game on both the offensive and defensive fronts to defeat a team that has compiled a 49-9 record over the last two seasons, including deep tournament runs. Deerfield used aggressive man-to-man defense to take Berkshire out of their game right from the tip. Senior tri-captain, Caroline Ashford, led the defensive charge with exceptional post defense. Ashford held Berkshire’s strong center to just two points the entire game. The rest of the squad built off of Ashford’s solid defensive play – pressuring the ball and sliding into help – to hold a team that had previously been averaging 60.5 points per game to just 42 points.
The Big Green coupled their strong defensive play with great offensive execution. For the second game in a row, Deerfield spread the offensive wealth, with Libby Murray, Jess Hom, and Becca Harrington finishing in double figures. Harrington chipped in three three-pointers at crucial moments in the game to always keep Berkshire at an arm’s length.
The entire 11-man squad present at the tournament provided solid minutes for the Big Green, who look to continue their strong play on Friday, December 20th with two games to finish out the 2013 portion of their season.
