The Deerfield girls cross country team finished out the regular season this weekend undefeated for the third year in a row as they downed NMH 20-41. It was an unseasonably warm and sunny November day as the girls toed the line for the final lap of a long but wonderfully successful fall 2013 cross country campaign. There were some close calls this season for sure, but Saturday the girls went out in style as the bested NMH by putting five girls in front of their cross town rival’s second girl. Finishing for the Big Green varsity were senior co-captain Devinne Cullinane (2nd, 18:33), senior Caroline Wagner (3rd, 20:26), senior co-captain Lilah Lutes (4th, 20:35), sophomore Lauren Ilsley (5th, 21:20), sophomore Margo Downes (6th, 21:20), freshman Madisen Siegel (8th, 22:04), and junior Heidi Hunt (9th, 22:18). Also finishing for the Big Green were: Madeleine Genereux, Penelope Hough, Taylor Morash, Kaitlyn Fitzsimmons, Anna Berger, Lizzie Klink, Landy Qu, and Binger Shangguan. Resting this week were Phoebe Morss and Samantha Morse.
Please consider joining the girls next weekend up in frosty Concord, NH as they defend their division I New England title at the championship hosted by the St. Paul’s School. Starting time for the girls’ varsity race is 1:30 and the JV at 3:00. Last year the girls won the first cross country title in Deerfield Academy history and defending it would be a monumental accomplishment.
Finally, it’s been a wonderful fall 2013, and so on behalf of myself and the assistant coaches Cheri Karbon and Amanda Zranchev, we want to thank the girls for an amazing sustained effort, an elite professional work ethic, and the joy that they bring to us every day at practice and meets. From our killer Tuesday hard runs to our pool frolicking on Wednesdays and trips to Vermont on Thursdays, the weeks have flown by like the leaves of Autumn in a November wind, but memories have been created that will last lifetimes. We also want to take a moment to thank the parents for their love and support of their daughters; for those who where available at times to watch the team (and bring the many treats we enjoyed), and those who constantly supported us from afar. We all know you’re behind us and that warmth carries us through both the ups and downs.
Go Big Green! Hurrah!
