The girls’ varsity cross country team defeated a solid Phillips Exeter Academy team on Saturday. It was a cool, cloudy race time and their fan base was bundled in winter jackets, but for the runners, the conditions were perfect. The course was a little long (3.2+mi) via a slightly extended finish and overly wide turns, and yet the girls of DA and PEA took it out hard, mixing it up for the first two miles with the outcome in doubt the entire time. Eventually, in the third and final loop, the Deerfield squad began to pull away from their Exeter counterparts, with some impressive kicks the last 800m. In the end, Deerfield proved the dominant team, defeating PEA 19-39. First for Deerfield’s varsity and the day’s overall winner was junior Phoebe Morss in an impressive time of 19:45, followed by senior Caroline Wagner in second place (20:53), senior captain Lilah Lutes in (4th, 21:08), junior Sam Morse (5th, 21:23), sophomore Lauren Ilsley (7th, 21:39), sophomore Margo Downes (8th, 21:41), and freshman Madisen Siegel (14th, 22:23).
