It was a clash of two undefeated teams as a powerful Phillips Andover came to town on Saturday looking to knock Deerfield off of its third in-a-row undefeated regular season pedestal. The Blue went out hard and Deerfield’s girls responded with matches to virtually every Andover runner, save their superstar Anoush Shehadah, who has been ravaging course records across New England. Eventually, and with anxiety-laden coaches watch, Deerfield pulled off the victory with strong finishes in the last mile of the course. The final score was Deerfield 25 and Andover 30, a victory by a slim five points but a sweet victory nonetheless. The two teams were so well matched that any one of the Deerfield girls could have had a slightly bad day and cost the team the race, but happily, the girls all ran well and finished the last mile with purpose and vigor. Leading the way was senior captain Devinne Cullinane in 2nd, junior Phoebe Morss in 3rd, senior Catherine Wagner (5th), senior captain Lilah Lutes (7th), junior Samantha Morse (8th), sophomore Lauren Ilsley (11th), sophomore Margo Downes (12th), and freshman Madisen Siegel (17th). Finishing for Deerfield’s JV were Nahla Gedeon Achi, Heidi Hunt making her long awaited return, Megan Retana, Madeleine Genereux, Kylie Davis, Kaitlyn Fitzsimmons, Taylor Morash, Molly Kennedy, Emily Mahan, Asu Bilirgen, Bergen Carloss, Lizzie Klink, and Alex Patrylak. Come see the Big Green face NMH as they wrap up their regular season here at home. The week following is the New England Championship at St. Paul’s where Deerfield hopes to defend their championship title.
Go Big Green, hurrah!
