10/5/13 – Deerfield XC at Loomis, with Hotchkiss, Taft, and NMH
After a morning of clouds and rain, the weather broke in Windsor, Conn., on Saturday and a warm sunny day greeted the Deerfield boys’ Cross Country team for their fourth meet of the season. Deerfield joined Northfield Mount Hermon, Taft, and Hotchkiss, along with host Loomis Chaffee, for a five-way meet featuring several of the top Division I teams in New England. The hot weather was balanced by Loomis’ fast course and the stiff competition, so times were fast. Injuries and scheduled rests kept the Big Green out of the win column on the day, but every single athlete in the Green & White set a new personal best.
Gene Thagard ’15 and Henry Quesada ’17 broke the tape first for the Big Green, finishing 16th and 17th overall, respectively, and achieving the same official time. A newcomer to cross country, Francois Laflamme ’16 finished 24th, followed immediately by Martin Gaspar ’14 in 25th and another rookie runner, Sam Vigneault ’17 in 27th place. Junior Henry Sanford rounded out Deerfield’s varsity squad, finishing in 30th place. With less than a minute separating DA’s first through sixth runner, and only one senior in that mix, the future looks bright for Deerfield’s harriers.
Big Green runners performed well in the Junior Varsity race, too, with Bryce Klehm ’15 leading the way in 3rd place. Ken Park ’15 and Grant Louis ’14 crossed the line next, taking 16th and 17th place. Dylan Alvarez ’17 returned to action after missing some time due to injury, finishing 29th with a strong comeback time. Robbie Williams, another freshman, deserves congratulations for finishing his first career race – he was 56th overall in the JV race. Way to go, Robbie!
Deerfield’s harriers will see Loomis again next week, this time on the turf of their archrival Choate Rosemary Hall. Following that meet, the Big Green hosts two meets in a row against Phillips Exeter on 10/12 and Phillips Andover on 10/19.
