4th Annual Brush Preseason Invitational
The Deerfield Boys Cross Country team kicked off the 2013 campaign on a sunny but cool and blustery day on the Lower Levels with the 4th edition of the Peter Brush Preseason Invitational. Joined by seven other teams for this low-key season-opening affair, the DA harriers got off to a fine start with a handful of strong performances from returning athletes and some impressive debuts from newcomers to the squad. There is no team scoring for this event.
All six of Deerfield’s finishers in the underclass race were new students, led by freshmen Henry Quesada (3rd) and Hughes Benjamin (5th). Francois Laflamme ’16 and Sam Vigneault ’17 weren’t far behind, finishing 7th and 8th, respectively, and Derek Alvarez ’17 took the fifth spot for DA’s underclass runners, finishing 16th overall. Freshman Teddy Donnelley captured 22nd overall in his first career cross country race. Congratulations to all these DAXC first-timers!
The top four spots in the upperclass race were hotly contested between several of the top runners in Divisions I and II of New England. St. Mark’s and Groton, two perennial contenders in the ISL, and Cushing, another Division II stalwart, provided excellent competition on the Deerfield course. Ultimately, senior captain Reed Horton finished 4th overall to pace Deerfield’s runners. Gene Thagard ’15 was close behind in 10th overall, followed by Martin Gaspar ’14 (13th) and co-captain David Hamilton ’14 (23rd overall). After Hamilton, a pack of Deerfield runners came across the line together, suggesting a promising team approach for the weeks to come!
Many thanks to all the teams who made the trip to Deerfield at this early stage of the season to enjoy some relaxed competition and fresh apples. As far as Deerfield’s historians can tell, today was the first time for St. Mark’s on the Deerfield course – glad to see the Eastern Mass. competition! Next week Deerfield’s varsity runners head to Canterbury for another early-season invitational.
