With temperatures unseasonably warm and the trails and fields soggy from a long day of rain on Friday, Deerfield’s boys’ cross country team traveled to Phillips Exeter Academy for their annual dual meet. Exeter’s home course advantage and impressive depth were too much for Deerfield’s harriers today; the defending New England champions proved they are still the team to beat in November with a resounding 17 – 44 win over the Big Green.
Exeter’s top runner, Kieran Scannell, raced to an overpowering win in 15:51. Three Exeter teammates followed before Deerfield’s first runner, Robert Beit, crossed the line in 16:33. Classmate Ben Wood was right behind Beit, finishing 6th in 17:02. Tri-captain Teddy Romeyn and freshman Ethan Brand-LaBarge were DA’s next finishers, crossing the line together to capture 17th and 18th place. Gene Thagard ’15 completed Deerfield’s scoring five with his 23rd place finish.
Deerfield’s top JV finisher was junior Martin Gaspar, who finished 33rd overall in 20:27. Henry Sanford and Anthony Lauw were close behind in 35th and 36th place, respectively. Next week, Deerfield heads to Andover, Mass., for a dual meet with Phillips Academy.
