2011 Richard Miller Invitational @ Westminster School – 10/2/11
After a day and a half of steady rain, the precipitation let up for a few hours on Saturday for the 6th Annual Richard Miller Invitational hosted by the Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut. Other than the saturated ground, the overcast, cool weather presented favorable conditions for a race, and Deerfield enjoyed a successful team effort. When all the races had concluded, both Deerfield’s Boys and Girls teams defended their titles from 2010. DA’s boys finished with a team score of 31; Tabor Academy was second at 54.
Deerfield was paced by a pack of four veteran runners who led the race from the starting gun, relenting only in the final meters to a strong runner from the Pomfret School. Sweeping 2nd through 5th place, the group of Fred Quesada ’12, Ben Wood ’13, Robert Beit ’13, and George Reich ’13 worked together throughout the 5k race and finished within 15 seconds of each other. Charlie Wilson ’12 rounded out Deerfield’s scoring contingent, finishing 17th. Warner Brown ’13 and David Hamilton ’14 weren’t far behind, finishing 20th and 33rd in the varsity race.
Ryan Heffernan ’12 finished 2nd in the Junior Varsity race, pacing a group of Deerfield runners that included many first-time cross-country racers. Mohan Yin ’12 and Teddy Romeyn ’13 were Deerfield’s other finishers in the top 15 of the Junior Varsity race, placing 10th and 15th overall. Congratulations are in order for all the Big Green harriers who completed their first 5k race today!
With the invitational season coming to a close, Big Green cross country will begin a series of dual and tri meets leading up to the New England Championships in November. On Saturday, October 8th the Big Green will travel to Trinity-Pawling in New York.
