Varsity Soccer (Boys) vs. Salisbury at Home

“Get better every day” has been a theme of the boys’ team so far this season. Today Deerfield took its first win, 3-1, in a fine game against the Salisbury boys on the home field in Deerfield. After a spirited and high energy start from both sides that saw both teams running end to end Salisbury provided the first test of goalie Andrew Shediac, whose early stop provided the mature presence that allowed the Deerfield boys to find their game and attack. Soon thereafter the Deerfield attack began to provide numerous chances, among them a fine combination between ZZ Salvador and Skye Perot that narrowly missed scoring. At the 23 minute mark Daniel Blohm and Stephen Baisch combined to beat the Salisbury defense for the Deerfield 1-0 lead, but Salisbury scored immediately after to even the tally on a lightning strike down the left wing. As the half wound to its finish the Green team kept the pressure on and finally took the lead for good on a fine combination from the left wing among Luke Walsh, Baisch and finally Blohm for the marker. The opening of the second half saw Deerfield’s kickoff play run to success via Baisch to Blohm, and the team fought hard to maintain and extend the two-goal lead for the rest of the game. Salisbury reorganized its attack and had Deerfield defending  a much more direct assault for most of the middle stages of the final 45, but the back four and Shediac held strong and allowed no more goals. In the final ten minutes Deerfield once more had the ball and the attack, creating several more good chances. This was a team win, anchored from the hardy play of the back line that has worked hard to match the theme: get better every day. Several starters watched from the sidelines due to injury while the players they have helped make better made their chance into the season’s first victory. And a tip of the hat to Cole Horton, who returned from ten days away with Round Square to arrive from a long trip and then play a great game.
