Deerfield and NMH boys met today on the pitch at Deerfield for their annual matchup. A threat of storminess made this the only game in town and it was played in cool and breezy conditions. Both teams worked hard and the game had a real ebb and flow over its ninety minutes, ending with a Deerfield 2-1 victory. Deerfield opened the scoring in the fourteenth minute after a nice buildup created a shot and then a rebound for Jackson Dayton to finish. NMH responded with good pressure and finally equalized in the twenty-fourth on a counter down the left flank and a line-drive cross finished cleanly by a fine run through the middle. The second half saw some excellent midfield work and combination play by NMH that produced a few hard-luck flurries and at least two crossbar shots. In the eighteenth minute Deerfield managed a full-field counter of its own that Luke Walsh completed pushing through the center of the NMH defense and finishing cleanly to put the Green back on top. NMH responded two minutes later with a fine breakthrough that the DA defense contested gamely but fouled, giving NMH a penalty kick opportunity. As he has so many times this season, Andrew Shediac came up big with an excellent diving save to his right post. The play lifted the DA boys to redouble their hard work and they held the advantage to the final whistle. Another fine win for hard work by all and some special performances from our senior leaders.
