Deerfield played Loomis on a fine fall day and lost in the final two minutes to a Loomis side that got stronger as the game went on. The game began with both teams probing a bit and they seemed to mirror each other in organization, staying quite compact and looking for ways past the other’s defense. Several offside calls slowed the Loomis efforts to break through and when the ball did goalie Andrew Shediac was there. With 25 to play in the first half Jackson Dayton hit a fine corner that Phil Bowman converted at the far post to give Deerfield the lead, and the half finished 1-0. From the second half kickoff Deerfield got in again on fine combination play but the Loomis keeper made a huge stop. Four minutes later a good cross almost found Luke Walsh at the far post for the Green, but thereafter the Loomis team seemed to find greater pace and performance. The rest of the game was a series of Loomis attacks and valiant but increasingly desperate defense from Deerfield, and Loomis eventually equalized on a very fine long ball that came out of the sun over Shediac into the far upper corner. It was a goal that few would have stopped, even without the sun. Loomis built on that energy and continued forward until the final game winner with under two minutes to play. A well-earned and well played game from Loomis, full credit for the strong finish, and cheers, too, to the Deerfield boys for fine effort all the way.
