Varsity Hockey (Girls) vs. Westminster at Home

Deerfield took on a talented Westminster squad at home on Wednesday afternoon. The Big Green had the better of the play in the first period, playing solid defensively, breaking the puck out effectively, and creating some solid scoring opportunities. However, the visitors got on the board first late in the first period on a DA 5 vs 3 when a puck slipped through the legs of Hannah Insuik ’13 from the opposite blue line. This unlucky bounce seemed to change the momentum of the game, as Westminster started the second period on fire. Two mental lapses led to quick goals, and the Big Green spent much of the period pinned in their own end. Deerfield rebounded in the final fifteen minutes, however, stringing together a series of good shifts. After Westminster scored their fourth goal on a blast from the point, Devinne Cullinane ’14 got Deerfield on the board, converting passes from Kayla O’Connor ’14 and Kylie Davis ’14. The home team had several other excellent scoring chances, but the Westy goalie stood tall. The visitors scored their fifth goal on a beautiful 2 vs 1. Despite the score, the Big Green battled hard and competed well against this perennial powerhouse. Shots on goal were 25-16 in favor of Westminster. After Winter Storm Nemo caused the cancellation of Friday night’s match-up against St. Paul’s, we are hopeful to get in our game against Berkshire on Saturday afternoon. Many thanks to the Yue family for the chips, cupcakes and strawberries after the game!
