The Deerfield Girls’ Hockey team kicked off the season with a 2-0 victory over the Troy Albany Ice Cats. After a scoreless first period, during which the Big Green controlled much of the play, DA got on the board first during a power play halfway through the second period. Maryanne Iodice ’14 finished off a nice passing sequence by blasting a shot into the upper corner of the net, with Kayla O’Connor ’14 and Katherine Jackson ’15 earning the assists. The Big Green added an insurance marker in the third period, as Taylor Morash ’16 tipped in a Mettler Growney ’13 shot. Devinne Cullinane ’14 earned an assist on the play. Emily Yue ’16 and Hannah Insuik ’13 combined to make 8 saves for the shutout, while the Ice Cats goalie faced 27 shots. Though there is much work to be done before facing Loomis at home on Wednesday, we are off to a good start. Many thanks to the Insuiks and Gallaghers for the pulled pork, cupcakes, salad and fruit after the game!
