Varsity Hockey (Girls) vs. Exeter at Home

A great win against a solid Exeter squad. Both teams were held scoreless for the first two periods, as the offences struggled to maintain momentum and possession. The visitors got on the board first, as they capitalized on a Deerfield giveaway less than four minutes into the final stanza. The Big Green finally came to life, however, and each line worked hard to generate scoring opportunities. The line of Mettler Growney ’13, Devinne Cullinane ’14, and Taylor Morash ’16 used their speed to get in behind the Exeter defense, while Madi Lyford ’15, Emma Siefert ’16, and Elliot Gilbert ’16 did a fantastic job on the forecheck. With less than two minutes to go, Growney buried the puck off of a scrum in front of the net to tie the game, with Maryanne Iodice ’14 and Elana Van Arnam ’13 earning the assists. In the overtime session, Deerfield took advantage of a power play opportunity, moving the puck effectively before Iodice buried a shot into the top corner to give the home team the win. Katherine Jackson ’15 and Kayla O’Connor ’14 earned the assists on the game winner. Though not our best game, the team really came together in the final fifteen minutes to earn the hard-fought win. O’Connor, Jackson, Growney, and Lucy Lytle ’15 were very effective on the penalty kill, and Emily Yue ’16 made 17 stops in goal. Many thanks to the Cullinane family for the snacks after the game. Next up is a big week with games against Choate, New Hampton, and Taft.
