The squad from Pomfret hopped off the bus with a spring in their step and pushed the pace right from the opening whistle.  The DA girls, on the other hand, had a bit of a struggle to shake off the cobwebs and let up an early goal less than  minute  in to the game.  However, that early goal would prove to be Pomfret’s only tally for the day and Deerfield would spend most of the remainder of the game clawing their way to a winning goal.  DA outshot Pomfret 9-2 in the first half and had many more corners but the Pomfret defense and goaltending proved to be superb and Deerfield struggled to find the back of the net.  M. Shilling managed to tie the game late in the first half on a tip from L Lytle and the half finished tied at 1-1.  The second half followed a similar storyline with Deerfield shooting 13 times on goal only to be stymied by Pomfret’s tenacious D.  Finally, with four minutes left in the contest, L Lytle found the back of the net off of a shot by M Growney to pull ahead 2-1.  Two minutes later, M Murphy followed suit off of a cross by L Lytle to send the score to 3-1 in favor of the Girls in Green.  Hats off to a strong effort by Pomfret, their squad fought hard for 60 minutes.  Deerfield remains at home this Saturday for the annual match against a Hotchkiss squad that has won 10 New England crowns in a row and returns many of their starters from last years championship team.  If you’re in the Pioneer Valley, head over to the DA turf at 2pm for what could be an epic match this early in the season.
