Deerfield Cross Country at Trinity-Pawling, with Berkshire and Kent – 10/8/11
With temperatures climbing into the high seventies and Trinity-Pawling’s campus buzzing with homecoming spirit, Deerfield’s Cross Country team arrived with a mixture of veteran runners and first-time racers for a four-way meet with T-P, Berkshire, and Kent. DA’s boys boarded the bus for the long trip back to the Pioneer Valley with three victories under their belts. The team scores were: DA 25 – TP 30, DA 22 – Kent 33, and DA 20 – Berkshire 37.
Berkshire’s top runner, Chris Bowman, paced the field, winning the race by a wide margin. Deerfield’s top three finishers crossed the line together in 3rd, 4th, and 5th place: Reed Horton ’14 led the way, followed by seniors Alfonce Nzioka – in his debut race – and Brad Marshall. Sophomore David Hamilton continued his strong debut season for DA, finishing 10th, followed by Mohan Yin ’12 who rounded out DA’s top five with his 15th place finish. Deerfield’s next pack came through a little less than a minute later. Teddy Romeyn ’13 and James Freda ’14 crossed the line together in 25th and 26th place, followed closely by Nate Lane ’14 and Chris Ortega ’13.
Congratulations are in order for Sam Johnson ’15 and David Kim ’14, in addition to Nzioka, who today finished their first career cross country race. The dual meet season is off to a great start for Deerfield’s harriers; next week the full team will travel to Loomis Chaffee for what promises to be a competitive and spirited meet between two well-matched squads.
