A cold, blustery day on the lower levels greeted Deerfield’s harriers for the final dual meet of the 2012 season. With one week before the New England championships, cross-valley rivals Northfield Mount Hermon were the Big Green’s guests for the day, and the Hoggers ran an aggressive race to edge the hometown team 26 – 33. For the six seniors on Deerfield’s roster, this was their last home race; their leadership and commitment will be missed.
Robert Beit finished the penultimate race of his high school cross country career in fine form, winning the varsity race by a wide margin. He looks to be in top shape going into next week’s championship meet! Close behind him were his teammates, classmates, and co-captains, Ben Wood and George Reich. They finished 4th and 5th behind two strong efforts from NMH; Deerfield XC fans have one more chance to watch these three impressive seniors race! Up-and-coming sophomore Gene Thagard was DA’s next finisher, coming in 11th place in a personal best 18:25. Deerfield’s third captain, Teddy Romeyn, finished his home career just behind Thagard, finishing 12th in 18:41. Warner Brown (13th) and Henry Sanford (14th) rounded out the Deerfield varsity.
Nate Lane ’14 took 4th place overall in the JV race as Deerfield’s top finisher, followed closely by David Hamilton, who is returning from a lingering injury. It was great to see Woody back on the course! Numerous personal bests highlighted the JV race for Deerfield – so many novice runners have shown improvement this season, it was a pleasure to see the dual meet season finish with such individual accomplishment. Congratulations to all competitors!
Next Saturday marks the close of the 2012 Cross Country season; Northwest Park in Windsor, CT, will play host to the Division I New England Championships. All are welcome – come support DAXC and the remarkable class of 2013 in their final race in the Green & White!
