Deerfield Cross Country vs. Phillips Exeter Academy @ Deerfield – 10/22/11
With the lower athletic fields still recovering from the Deerfield River’s late summer course correction, Deerfield hosted its one home meet of the season on a makeshift course using the dirt roads winding their way through the corn fields to the north of campus. Phillips Exeter made the long trip from New Hampshire for the second showdown of undefeated teams in as many weeks for the Deerfield boys. Exeter continued their winning ways, overcoming an aggressive attack from Deerfield on a fast, short course. The final score was Exeter 18, Deerfield 37.
Junior Ben Wood was Deerfield’s only finisher who broke up Exeter’s winning pack; Wood finished 3rd overall and can claim to be the only prep runner who has accomplished that feat this year. Following Wood in Deerfield’s top five were senior and co-captain Fred Quesada (7th), juniors George Reich (8th) and Robert Beit (9th), and sophomore Reed Horton (10th). Co-captain Brad Marshall sped past two Exeter runners in the final lap around Deerfield’s track with a blazing kick to take 11th. David Hamilton ’14 rounded out DA’s top seven for the second week in a row, finishing 14th.
Mohan Yin led the way for Deerfield in the JV race, finishing 9th overall. Teddy Romeyn, Nate Lane, and James Freda were all close behind in season-best times. Congratulations are in order for senior Wit Chanyarungrojn, who finished his first race of the season despite battling painful injuries for much of the year. Wit finished 19th in the JV race.
Three weeks of training remain for Deerfield’s intrepid harriers as they take dead aim at the New England championships at Andover on November 12th. Next week the cross country squads will travel to Phillips Andover academy to face off with last year’s New England champions. See you there!
