Deerfield Cross Country vs. Loomis Chaffee and Choate, at Loomis – 10/15/11
Deerfield’s varsity seven faced and passed their first real test of the season today, besting a talented and experienced Loomis Chaffee squad in Windsor, CT. Rain, clouds, and occasional sunshine flitted through the New England afternoon as Deerfield met Loomis and Choate Rosemary Hall for two dual meets on Loomis’ flat, soggy course. The Loomis-Deerfield matchup was a rematch of the top two teams at last month’s Canterbury Invitational. Deerfield’s harriers avenged the Canterbury loss with a 21 – 34 victory and swept the top five places against Choate for a 15 – 40 win.
With fresh legs from an off weekend last Saturday, a pack of four Deerfield upperclassmen led the way today: Ben Wood ’13 and Fred Quesada ’12 broke the tape together in first and second place, followed by Robert Beit ’13 in fourth and George Reich ’13 in sixth place. Sophomore Reed Horton had another breakthrough race capped by a thrilling kick to finish 8th overall, narrowly missing 7th place in a tight duel with a Loomis runner. Co-captain Brad Marshall ’12 (20th) and David Hamilton ’14 (25th) rounded out the varsity seven, with Alfonce “The Domestique” Nzioka slipping in between them but not figuring into the team scoring.
Several Deerfield athletes made big strides in the JV race, led by Ryan Heffernan ’12 in 9th place. Heffernan’s classmate Brad Hakes was close behind in 11th place, followed by Mohan Yin ’12 and Teddy Romeyn ’13 in 24th and 25th. For Hakes, it was his first race of a new cross country career – Deerfield’s rookie of the week!
Next week, Deerfield will host its only home meet of the season against Phillips Exeter Academy. Due to the Lower Level flooding the course will be improvised, but the competition should be stiff and the fan support boisterous!
