GV Hockey vs. Westminster – Away

Ten days after they last played, Deerfield hit the road for a Wednesday evening game against two-time defending New England Champion Westminster. The Big Green got off to a good start, with Kayla O’Connor ’14 (in her first game back after a month long absence due to a shoulder injury) scoring a beautiful backhand goal off of a nice pass from Jamie Haddad ’12. Westminster was quick to respond, however, as they scored two goals in less than a minute to take the lead heading into the second period. The home team had the better of the chances in the second period, and were able to put one more past Hannah Insuik ’13 to earn a two-goal lead heading into the third period. Deerfield did not quit, however, and finally got their legs going in the last frame, using their quickness to generate several power play opportunities. Though we peppered the Westminster net with shots, only O’Connor ’14 was able to bang one past the Westy goalie with four minutes to go. Alanna McDonough ’12 and Haddad ’12 earned the assists on the goal. Unfortunately, the Black & Gold captain finished off her hat-trick less than a minute later, and the score ended 4-2 in favor of the home team. Insuik finished with 13 saves for the Big Green, while Deerfield fired 33 shots on the Westy net. Elana Van Arnam ’13 was outstanding on defense. Deerfield will look to put forth a more consistent effort on Friday night against St. Paul’s. Special thanks to the Serra and Hamilton families for the wonderful meatball subs, salad, brownies, cupcakes, and drinks after the game!
