Deerfield Girls’ Hockey began their season in front of a large home crowd against visiting Vermont Academy. Despite practicing as a team for the first time a mere five days earlier, the girls came out and played with energy, enthusiasm and heart. Vermont Academy opened the scoring with about four minutes left in the first period, but Kayla O’Connor responded one minute later by converting a beautiful pass from Jamie Haddad ’12 into the upper corner of the net. The second period was a wild affair, with Haddad scoring twice in the opening five minutes (off of assists from Elana Van Arnam “13 and Mettler Growney ’13), before Deerfield began a parade to the penalty box that listed for the duration of the period. Outstanding penalty killing by newcomer Alanna McDonough ’12 kept Vermont Academy at bay for much of the period, but the visitors managed to bang home a loose puck in the last minute of play to send the hosts to the locker room with a narrow 3-2 lead. Though Vermont did manage to tie the score midway through the third, Deerfield’s relentless attack produced the winning goal off of Haddad’s stick (assisted by McDonough). Sammy Hirshland ’13 finished with 20 saves, while the Vermont goalie made an impressive 35 saves for the visitors.Â
