On a snowy day, an injury plagued Deerfield squad headed to Watertown, CT to take on the Taft Rhinos. Despite an almost three hour bus ride on a green machine, DA came out firing in the first period, dominating play from start to finish. We were unable to capitalize on our chances however, and the teams headed to the locker room with the score knotted at zero. The second period was a different story, as Taft took advantage of a tired Deerfield squad. They kept us on our heels for much of the period, and were able to convert on a shot from the slot to take a one goal lead into the final fifteen minutes. The Big Green rallied in the third period and played inspired hockey, but the Rhino goalie held strong. Taft put the game away with an empty net goal in the final minute, and the score ended up 2-0 in favor of the home team. Hannah Insuik ’13 was once again strong in goal with 23 saves, while Deerfield fired 33 shots on the Rhino goal. The line of Devinne Cullinane ’14, Mettler Growney ’13, and Victoria Serra ’12 was particularly effective today, creating numerous chances through their solid puck movement down low. Special thanks to the Growneys for the pizza, cupcakes, blondies, and fruit after the game! Next up is Pomfret on Wednesday.Â
