GV Hockey vs. St. Paul’s – Home

Finally a home game! The Big Green took the ice today in a Friday evening match-up against St. Paul’s. The  first period was a back and forth affair, with both teams using their speed to cycle the puck in the offensive zone. Deerfield got on the board first, as Kelsey Gallagher ’13 bounced a shot past the SPS goalie five minutes into the period. Victoria Serra ’12 and Ryan Logie ’13 earned the assists on the goal. The second period was all Deerfield, as we fired 12 shots on goal, converting on two of them. First, Jamie Haddad put a beautiful shot into the top corner off of passes from Kayla O’Connor ’14 and Julie Wardwell ’12. Then, the line of Devinne Cullinane ’14, Katherine Jackson ’15, and Mettler Growney ’13 went to work, executing the forecheck and cycle to perfection until Growney finally backhanded the puck into the goal. Jackson and Gallagher picked up the assists on the play. The third period started off well, with Alanna McDonough ’12 burying a shot only 50 seconds in (O’Connor earned the assist), but St. Paul’s would not quit. They pulled the score to within three less than a minute later, and then closed the gap further on the power play halfway through the period. A defensive breakdown in the Deerfield end led to yet another SPS goal with 1:30 left on the clock, but Haddad put the game away with her second of the night off of passes from O’Connor and McDonough. Sammy Hirshland ’13 played well in goal and finished with 12 saves, while the SPS goaltender turned away 26 Deerfield attempts. All in all, a solid team effort. The girls played with intensity and heart, and skated away with a well-deserved win against a talented opponent. Special mention to Alanna McDonough for her tenacious play all over the ice. Thank you to the Cullinanes for the delicious chicken a la king, rolls, and ice cream sundaes after the game! The Big Green will hit the road again tomorrow for a game against Berkshire.
