GV Hockey vs. St. Mark’s – Home

In the last league game of 2011, the Deerfield girls took on a quick and talented team from St. Mark’s at home on Wednesday afternoon. The first period was a back and forth affair with both teams generating solid scoring opportunities. Alanna McDonough ’12 had the best chance of the period as she used her speed to break in alone, only to be thwarted by a nice save by the St. Mark’s goaltender. St. Mark’s dominated play in the beginning of the second period, as the Big Green struggled to break the puck out cleanly and became slightly disorganized in their own zone. However, it was the home team who jumped on the scoreboard first, as Maryanne Iodice ’14 scored the first goal of her DA career off of an assist from Lucy Lytle ’15. Deerfield was able to double their lead before the end of the period, as Jamie Haddad ’12 blocked a shot in her own end, raced up ice, and converted a beautiful give-and-go pass from McDonough. Eager to put the game away, the girls came out flying in the third period, and Haddad scored her second goal of the game four minutes in off of an assist from Kayla O’Connor ’14. The score would end 3-0, with Sammy Hirshland ’13 earning the win with 17 saves. The St. Mark’s goalie stopped 19 shots. Hats of to the St. Mark’s team, who played hard the entire game despite only having 10 healthy skaters. Special mention to Mettler Growney ’13 for her tenacious forechecking. The girls will now gear up for the Deerfield Invitational Holiday tournament, where they will play four games over the course of the next three days.
