GV Hockey vs. Loomis – Away

The girls in Green traveled to Windsor, CT this afternoon to take on Loomis. After losing twice to the Pelicans last year, both times in overtime, this new group was eager to come out and make a statement. Deerfield came out flying, and all three lines were able to generate solid scoring opportunities. Alanna McDonough ’12 had a few near misses in front of the net, but the Loomis goaltender denied each Deerfield attempt and both teams went into the locker room scoreless after fifteen minutes of play. Though the Pelicans picked up their pace in the second period, it was Deerfield who got on the board first. Tenacious forechecking by the line of Mettler Growney ’13, Devinne Cullinane ’14 and Katherine Jackson ’15 led to a power play opportunity, and Jamie Haddad ’12 found the back of the net less than twenty seconds later. Though the Big Green took their lead into the third period, Loomis refused to quit, and found the tying goal with less than three minutes left in the game. Both teams were able to generate solid scoring opportunities in the overtime period, but the game ended in a draw. Special mention goes out to Elana Van Arnam ’13 and Maryanne Iodice ’14 for their solid play on defense, and to Victoria Serra ’12 for her wonderful work in front of her own net. Hannah Insuik ’13 was solid in goal with 24 saves in her first start of the season, while the Loomis goalie came up with 32 stops. Thank you to the Haddads for the delicious meatball subs and salad after the game! Next up is Kingswood-Oxford on Saturday.
