GV Hockey vs. Hotchkiss – Home

Deerfield took the ice this afternoon against a deep and talented team from Hotchkiss. The Big Green came out flying, generating scoring chances early on and keeping the visitors on their heels. Jamie Haddad ’12 got Deerfield on the board first, as she converted a nice pass from Julie Wardwell ’12. Hotchkiss responded, however, with less than two minutes to go in the period, and so both teams headed to the locker room with the score knotted at one. In contrast to the back and forth action of the opening 15 minutes, the second period was full of penalties on both sides. Halfway through the period, already with the man up, Deerfield took advantage of a delayed penalty to take the lead when Haddad ’12 pounded home her own rebound. Mettler Growney ’13, Victoria Serra ’12, Shelbi Kilcollins ’12 and Alanna McDonough ’12 were particularly effective on the penalty kill this period to preserve the lead heading into the final 15 minutes. In the third period, Haddad completed her hat trick as she roofed a shot from the side of the net. Kayla O’Connor ’14 and McDonough picked up the assists. Unfortunately, the penalty kill units got more action in the third period, and Hotchkiss pulled to within one on a 5 vs. 3 advantage. The home team was able to shut the door however, thanks to some timely saves from Hannah Insuik ’13 and excellent defensive play from Wardwell, Maryanne Iodice ’14, Kylie Davis ’14, Kelsey Gallagher ’13, and Ryan Logie ’13. Insuik finished with 24 saves, while Deerfield fired 29 shots on the Hotchkiss goal. Special mention to McDonough, making her return after a two games absence due to injury, who sparked our team on both ends of the ice. Thank you to the Iodices for the delicious home-made lasagna, fruit, veggies and drinks after the game! Next up is a trip to Williston on Wednesday.
