The Big Green came to the rink this afternoon fired up to take on rival Choate, a fast, skilled, and physical team. Each player was up to the task, however, as Deerfield put together forty-five minutes of smart, intense, and team hockey. The first period was a back and forth affair, with neither team able to maintain sustained pressure in the offensive zone. Katherine Jackson ’15 had the best chance of the period, as she nearly converted a beautiful pass from Jamie Haddad ’12 on a 2 vs. 1 break. The game opened up in the second period, with both squads generating dangerous scoring opportunities. Julie Wardwell ’12 got the Big Green on the board first first as she streaked down the ice, put a shot on net, recovered the rebound and fired it into the top corner. Kelsey Gallagher ’13 earned the assist on the play. Choate responded with a flurry of activity around the Deerfield goal, but goalie Hannah Insuik ’13 and the defense held strong. In particular, Kylie Davis ’14 made an outstanding play in the crease to turn away a sure goal. With less than four minutes to go in the period, Alanna McDonough ’12 doubled Deerfield’s lead after a sustained attack in the Choate zone. Linemates Haddad ’12 and Jackson ’15 earned the assists. Choate came out flying in the third period, and had Deerfield on its heels early on. However, solid defensive zone coverage, hard work along the boards and in front of the net, and timely saves by Insuik ’13 kept Choate off of the scoreboard. Haddad ’12 iced the game with an empty net goal with one second left on the clock. Insuik finished with 20 saves, while the Choate goalie turned away 17 of the 19 shots sent her way.
This was a fantastic win for the Big Green, and we look forward to carrying this momentum into our games on Friday and Saturday. Special thanks to the Davis and Haddad families for the chicken wings, 7 layer dip, cheese & crackers, cupcakes, and rice krispie squares after the game!
