The Big Green hit the road yet again for a Saturday afternoon game against the always talented Berkshire Bears. Despite having played the night before, Deerfield was up to the task in this fast-paced game. The first period was an up and down affair, with Berkshire getting on the board first off of an outside shot that found its way past goalie Hannah Insuik ’13. Deerfield had the better of the play in the period, however, and nearly evened the score when Devinne Cullinane ’14 made a beautiful pass to a streaking Lucy Lytle ’15. However, the Berkshire goalie was able to slide across and make a fantastic save. Luckily, with less than a minute to go in the period, Julie Wardwell ’12 sniped a shot into the top corner from the top of the circles, and the teams headed into the locker room knotted at one. The second and third periods were physical in nature, with both teams having opportunities on the power play. While the Big Green maintained their edge in the middle frame, Berkshire came out flying in the third and has us on our heels on several occasions. Despite solid scoring opportunities on both sides, neither team would light the lamp again, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie after a five minute overtime period. Insuik made 25 saves for the visitors, while the Berkshire goalie stopped 31 shots. Special mention to the DA defense: Wardwell, Maryanne Iodice ’14, Julia Hamilton ’14, Kylie Davis ’14, Ryan Logie ’13, and Elana Van Arnam ’13 for a very tenacious, smart, and well-played game. Thank you to the Haddad and Kilcollins families for the chili, chips, salad, cupcakes and drinks after the game, and to the Insuiks for the delicious dessert. Next up is Cushing at home on Wednesday. With four regular season games left, our record sits at 13-6-2.Â
