Deerfield played their home opener at Headmasters Field on Saturday, April 7th against a well-matched Cushing team. Luke Barkowski (’12) pitched well for six solid innings, followed by Nolan Doyle (’12) in relief.  Deerfield’s offense was catalyzed by some timely hitting from Doug Vallar (’14) in the fourth inning when he scorched a two-run double with two outs. Catcher Mike Barry (’12), made two acrobatic catches on foul balls during consecutive at-bats in the seventh inning, which made quick work of the heart of Cushing’s order and gave Deerfield an opportunity to mount a comeback in the bottom half of the inning. A competitive and well-played game by both teams came down to the final out made by Cushing with the tying run left stranded at third base for Deerfield.  The two teams will meet again at Cushing on Wed, May 2nd
