Deerfield travelled to Cushing Academy on Wednesday for an important CNEPSBL match-up. The Big Green could not get the bats going against the steady Cushing hurler, and for the second straight game, Deerfield was shut out, losing the game 11-0. Deerfield played Cushing tight for the first four innings, keeping it to a 2-0 margin, but a combination of defensive vulnerability, timely hitting from the Penguin offense, and the balls not bouncing Deerfield’s way, allowed for an 8-run inning for Cushing in the fifth. Despite the loss, pitcher Ben Wood (’13) had a commendable outing on the mound, followed by freshman, Luke Bakker (’15) who was in for mop-up duty late in the game. Tabor Edwards (’12) and Niko Grupen (’12) continue to hit the ball well at the top of the Big Green line-up and Nicky Rault (’13) stepped in nicely to fill the void left by an injured Mike Barry (’12) behind the plate. The Big Green will host their final weekend home game, Saturday 5/5 on Headmaster’s Field @ 3:30 vs. Worcester Academy.
