Deerfield travelled to Andover to face a talented Phillips Academy squad on Saturday afternoon for two NEPSBL games. In the first game, the Big Green received a standout pitching performance from Luke Barkowski (’12). Barkowski pitched a complete-game 2-hitter, but Deerfield lost the game 2-0. Andover was able to score both runs on a bloop hit to shallow left field in the 4th inning. The second game was not quite as tight as the first, although Deerfield battled tough on the mound behind a solid outing from Nolan Doyle (’12) and Ben Wood (’13) in relief. The scoreboard showed a 5-0 win for Andover in game 2. The Big Blue pitchers were the difference makers on Saturday, as they kept the Deerfield bats quiet all afternoon. Deerfield combined for only 5 hits on the day. There were a few innings cut short by mistakes on the bases for Deerfield, which prevented them from earning more scoring chances. With catcher, Mike Barry on the injured list, Nicky Rault (’13) performed yeoman’s duty by catching both ends of the double-header. Despite the losses, it was a quality day of baseball for the much-improved Deerfield team, and the Big Green have put together a consistent stretch of baseball over the past four games. Deerfield will look to rebound against Williston on Monday, as they begin the final week of the season, and hope to keep building momentum heading into their post-season tournament.
