Cross Country, Girls: Varsity defeats Andover

Jack London, that great master of the tensions between civilization and wild nature, once famously anticipated the Deerfield Girls’ Cross Country squad when he said “I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.” This Thoreau-esque call to arms strikes a chord with the 2018 Big Green cross country team. The girls have decided to “use” their time this season, and use it they did on Saturday against the

Cross Country, Girls: Junior Varsity vs. Exeter

“He piled upon the whale’s white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart’s shell upon it.” For my money, this is one of the most compelling lines in American literature. Captain Ahab, blinded via a vengeful rage, was clearly losing sight of reality in a bloodlust for payback. It

Soccer, Girls: Junior Varsity defeats Exeter

The sun was out, the weather was beautiful, and the Deerfield team was back to full strength. It was Exeter family weekend, and their team came out hard, while the Doors suffered from a bit of bus legs, though the bench was very active in pumping up the players. Exeter controlled the temp but DA defense were unstoppable, managing to shut their offensive unit out from all but two shots. Ali Thomas, Kat Hioe, Sarah

Cross Country, Girls: Varsity vs. Choate

I am glad to the brink of fear, wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson in his 1836 Transcendentalism tour de force, Nature. It is a counterintuitive notion to be so happy that you are afraid- until it happens to you. After our victory last week against an optimistic St. Pauls School we were finally starting to believe we had some legitimate momentum this season, but then a determined and much improved Choate squad came to town on

Soccer, Girls: Junior Varsity defeats St. Paul’s

In the JV squad’s toughest match up so far this season, they persevered against a deep St. Pauls team for a 2-0 victory. Goals were scored by Caroline Hoff ’22 for her first of the season on a beautiful rebound, and Kikka Guidici ’20. Both were assisted by Sarah Stonestreet ’21 who had a beautiful game against her former alma mater. The shots were evenly matched the entire game and so were the teams. St.

Cross Country, Coed: Junior Varsity vs. Westminster Invitational

They say even a broken clock is right twice a day, and so it seems with the Big Green Cross Country Machine that winning the Miller Invitational two years in a row might just be a bit of dumb luck, or is it? Perhaps these girls are on to something; some kind of attitudinal recipe for success that they now understand and invoke

Perhaps these girls are on to something; some kind of attitudinal recipe for success that they now understand and invoke with reckless abandon? Whatever it was that convinced them to train a

Jane McDonald’s (Shiverick) Baby Shower

The girls of 2004 had a wonderful time in CT at a baby shower in honor of Jane McDonald. Can’t wait to meet the future DA grad! Sarah Alvarez, Barkley Hickox, Jane Shiverick, Carolyn Ashby (Romney). Margaret McSpadden Sarah Alvarez 2004

Soccer, Girls: Junior Varsity defeats Westminster

The season opener was a successful one for the Doors in their match against the Westminster Martlets. From the very first whistle, Deerfield pushed the tempo and the ball was immediately in the Westminster defensive end. Though there were several great plays in the midfield and offensive end, including some stellar ball movement from Kiki Brainard (’22) and some amazing offensive rushes and shots from Ellia Chiang (’21), Kikka Giudici (’20), and Liz Tarazi (’19),

Cross Country, Girls: Varsity vs. Brush Invitational

It was technically still summer on Saturday at the 2018 Peter Brush Invitational and no one was in doubt as temperatures soared into the low 90s and an unforgiving sun seemed to probe its way to almost every corner of the course. Clear blue skies, a heavy humidity, long grass and soft ground rounded out a set of clearly adverse conditions for the runners who braved the underclass two mile and upper class five kilometer
