Arts Center

The Art Department’s programs are based in the Reed Center for the Arts, a comprehensive arts center with facilities for visual and performing arts alike.

Numerous exhibitions and performances take place in the arts center each year, drawing enthusiastic audiences and providing showcases for individual talents as well as group efforts. Exhibitions in the Hilson Gallery, Russell Gallery, and the student gallery provide recognition for promising young artists and photographers, while actors, technicians, dancers, and musicians showcase their talents in the performing arts spaces.

The Reed is also home to the Charles P. Russell Collection of American and European Paintings and Drawings; this fine study collection was given to Deerfield Academy by Mr. Russell’s daughters, Mrs. Lucius Potter and Ms. Lucia Russell of Greenfield, Massachusetts. The paintings in Mrs. Potter’s collection are primarily American and represent a chronological development of colonial art. Miss Russell’s collection is primarily European in origin from the 18th and 19th centuries.

When there are exhibitions, the Russell Gallery is open 8:30am-3:00pm, Monday through Friday, in the lower level of the Memorial Building.
