Applications for faculty positions are accepted all year. In response to projected retirements, applicants may be interviewed as early as the fall. However, the vast majority of open teaching and administrative positions become known in February and March of each year. Hence the optimum time to submit applications is December and January. Unless noted otherwise, candidates should send a cover letter and resume to John Taylor, Associate Head of School, via e-mail to facultypositions@deerfield.edu. Decisions regarding new members of the faculty are usually made from mid-March through mid-May.
For applicants interested in the Deerfield Academy Teaching Fellows Program, please send a personal statement articulating why you would be interested in teaching at Deerfield, a cover letter and resume to Karinne Heise, Assistant Dean of Faculty, via e-mail to facultypositions@deerfield.edu. The subject line in the e-mail should be Teaching Fellows Program. Decisions are usually made from mid-April through mid-May.
The Wallace Wilson Fellowship
If you are interested in becoming a Wilson Fellow or would like to suggest a candidate, send a cover letter and resume to John Taylor, Associate Head of School, via e-mail to facultypositions@deerfield.edu. The subject line in the email should be Wilson Fellow Program. Decisions regarding new members of the faculty are usually made from mid-March through mid-May.
In addition to teaching or administrative responsibilities, all positions involve activities that are normally part of a boarding school commitment: dormitory residence or association, coaching assignments, dining hall duties, committee work, and other routine duties. Given the nature of a boarding school, there is an assumption that faculty members can be called upon to fulfill these duties any evening and on weekends.
Each year, after identifying our teaching, coaching and other needs, the Dean of the Faculty along with department chairs or administrative officers will review all the appropriate resumes and schedule interviews with candidates. Interviews consist of a day-long visit to Deerfield to meet with all relevant school personnel (the Dean of the Faculty, the department chair, Dean of Students, Athletic Director, etc.). A tour of the campus with a Deerfield student is part of the process. A class visitation and lunch with department members is scheduled. Candidates are called upon to teach a class.
Deerfield’s salary and benefits package is very competitive. Given the residential responsibilities of a boarding school, housing is provided either in a dormitory or Academy residences in Deerfield. For a comprehensive description of benefits see our Benefits page.
