Director of Advancement
Deerfield Academy, a coeducational, independent boarding school, seeks a senior administrator to be responsible for the overall vision, leadership, and results for the entire Alumni and Development Office and its programs. Founded in 1797 and located on a 200-acre campus in the center of historic Deerfield, Massachusetts, the Academy provides an education of unsurpassed quality to 630 students (50/50 boys/girls) in grades 9 through 12, and to a small number of post-graduates. Students at Deerfield come from 39 states and 32 countries. See www.deerfield.edu for more information.
The Director of Advancement is a key member of the Academy’s senior administrative team and reports directly to Dr. Margarita Curtis, who is in her eighth year as Head of School. Managing and leading an Alumni and Development staff of twenty-eight (28), the new Director of Advancement will lead and inspire the current operation and take it to the next level of success during and beyond the current capital campaign. We seek a dynamic, sophisticated and experienced fundraising professional who is committed to serving – along with the Head of School – as the Academy’s chief fundraiser, especially major gifts and principal gifts from alumni and parents.
In addition to the rigorous academic program, Deerfield students participate in a combination of top-tier athletic programs, music and performing arts programs, community service, and numerous clubs and organizations, generating tremendous loyalty among the 10,000 alumni of the Academy. Current endowment stands at $430 million. Operating expenses totaled $48 million, capital gifts $20 million, and annual giving $5.8 million in 2012-13. As of summer 2013, the Academy has raised about $152 million towards its $200 million comprehensive campaign announced in the fall of 2011.
Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of the best practices in all aspects of management, fundraising, trustee and volunteer relations, capital campaigns, major gifts, planned gifts, annual giving, alumni and parent programs. 10+ years of development experience required. The ability to excel both as a front-line fundraiser and as an excellent manager is essential. Experience running a successful capital campaign is important. Advancement work with an independent school, college, or a university is strongly preferred. B.A. degree is required.
