Cary, Michael

Advancement Officer for Special Projects

After earning his AB from Bowdoin in English, his MAT from Brown in History and his MA from Yale Divinity School, Michael joined the Deerfield faculty in 1976 and worked here for close to twenty years, teaching a variety of subjects, chairing the Philosophy and Religion Department, coaching squash, and serving as the Dean of Admissions, before he left Deerfield to become Lawrenceville’s eleventh Head Master. In 2003, Michael left academia to work first as the Executive Director of the Yellowstone Park Foundation in Bozeman, Montana, and then as Director of Major Gifts at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

In the summer of 2015, Michael retired from his teaching duties in the English department and took on the role of Advancement Officer for Special Projects, working out of Deerfield's Office of Advancement.
