Michael O'Donnell

Philosophy & Religion Teacher

A former attorney, Michael O'Donnell joined Deerfield’s faculty in 2001 and has been sharing his lifelong passion for philosophy ever since. Prior to teaching at Deerfield, Michael taught at schools including Universite Jean Moulin in Lyon, France and the Cambridge School of Weston. At Deerfield he currently teaches Ethics, Political Philosophy, Eastern Philosophy, and Existentialism. He also serves as the advisor to the Deerfield Forum, Deerfield’s debate and public speaking organization. His work with the Forum takes him to international competitions every year. He recently accompanied the US team to the World Individual Debate and Public Speaking Championships in Lithuania. In 2007 he obtained a master's degree in education from Columbia University as part of the Klingenstein Program. Michael lives in Shumway dormitory with his wife Sonja, a member of the English Department, and their son Julian. Michael is on sabbatical during the 2013-14 school year.
