Deerfield Academy Theater is proud to present its Spring 2015 production of Mary Zimmerman’s “Metamorphoses,” directed by Katie Speed. Shows are May 19-22 at 7pm, May 23 at 4pm in the Reid Black Box Theater.
Nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play in 2002, Mary Zimmerman’s “Metamorphoses” brings Ovid’s tales to stunning visual life. Set in and around a large pool of water on stage, “Metamorphoses” juxtaposes the ancient and the contemporary in both language and image to reflect the variety and persistence of narrative in the face of inevitable change.
Throughout the process of this production, an ensemble of 20 students has explored how love can transform us. It frightens us, inspires us to create, drives us to greed, causes us to make choices we shouldn’t have made, brings us to life when hope has gone. And when the lives of gods and humans entwine, these transformations move beyond the metaphorical and into the physical.
“Funny one moment, achingly sorrowful the next, ‘Metamorphoses’ somehow manages both to lift you out of the moment you’re living in and speak to it with piercing directness.” –Wall Street Journal
